Quick Getaways: Amsterdam

I arrived in Amsterdam, after the shortest flight I have ever had the pleasure of being on. Adjusting my eyes to the new sights and sounds of this wonderful place, I journeyed to my home for the next two days.

Amsterdam is a pretty interesting place; with a buzzing city centre that is fortunately not so busy that you cannot breathe. A place that surrounds the canal and thinly designed buildings that make you want to pop in and discover if they are bigger on the inside than they are outside. It is probably best you hire a bike, since that is the main method of transport and if you are short like me, settle for a “small person’s bike” which looks a lot like a child’s bike. Everyone is at least 6ft over there!

Next morning, we hired bikes and set off in search of breakfast, the only requirement being coffee and eggs. We stumbled on this beautifully modern café, with wooden beamed ceilings and tables that almost hung from the ceiling. With our mouths watering at the site, we swiftly ordered a classic avocado toast which came with creamy scrambled eggs and perfectly placed salmon. I am pleased to say that with all that bike riding, I had definitely worked up an appetite.
Happily satisfied, it was time to tackle the city centre. I have never seen so many bikes in one place! Breath-taking views of the canal, buildings erected from the era of the Habsburgs, and river boats dotted around created a relaxed atmosphere that I am sure any fellow traveller would agree with. Needless to say, I was in awe. Take a wander through the markets and see the endless cheeses, with different colours and different flavours. And don’t forget to take a famous photo in front of the I AMSTERDAM sign.

And, it clearly makes sense to end with cheese!

A beautiful end to a wonderful weekend.

A perfect treat at the Four Seasons

I had the amazing opportunity to visit La Dame de Pic at the Four Seasons Hotel and it was exquisite. Service was delightful, food was incredibly tasty and the company was of course, enjoyable. We began with Gin & Tonics, as you do... mine was a Japanese floral number which I definitely recommend. The first dish was a crab dish, made with mayonnaise on a blackcurrant & elderflower jelly. Next came beautiful little pasta parcels made with courgettes, and I think with Savarin cheese inside. These were so tasty, I ate them so fast! This Scottish salmon marinated in honey was so tender, almost melting in my mouth. Next came the roasted pigeon, with a beetroot jus and decorated with edible flowers. It was cooked to absolute perfection. Next came the deserts: Comparing the texture of this one to a cloud, I savoured every mouthful. I believe this was made with condensed milk and it was a perfect desert and not too heavy. Beautiful meringues: ...
